At the end of March 2009, the existing student route will close and be replaced by the new student tier (tier 4) of the points-based system. To be able to travel to the United Kingdom as a general student, or if you are already here and want to apply to extend your permission to stay, you must pass a points-based assessment and score 40 points. You will get:
30 points for a visa letter from a licensed sponsor; and
10 points if you can show (and have documents to prove as needed) you have enough money for your course fees and monthly living expenses (known as maintenance).
The maintenance requirement depends on the length of the course and where the student will study in the United Kingdom.

Tire-4 of the PBS relates to students. Tire-4 aims to make the student route both simpler and more robust. Integral to the new PBS is providing greater objectivity and transparency to the decision-making process. Under the current system Entry Clearance Officers are relied upon to make essentially subjective decisions about student’s intentions and ability to study a particular course and their decisions are regularly challenged. Under the PBS, each establishment will be entitled to issue their prospective students with a certificate of Sponsorship which will serve as a proxy to confirm the student’s ability and intention to study with them.
